nATION BUILDING & CANADA'S ARCTIC SOVEREIGNTY
Canada must return to the steady, humble, reliable nation that has defined us as a trusted partner and ally. As a founding nation of NATO 70 years ago, Canada committed to safeguard the freedom of its peoples, the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law.
To honour that commitment we must define a comprehensive foreign policy that recognizes the turbulent times in which we live. The threats we face today are different from those we faced in the 20th Century. In many ways they are more complex. But any solution continues to require strong partnerships of like-minded and confident nations, devoted to the protection and advancement of our values.
Now is not the time for complacency, fear or retreat. Now is the time for courage, alliances and strength – we must prepare for the coming storm and face the challenges head on.
I encourage you to click through the links below to see what I have been doing as the Member of Parliament to ensure this important federal priority is heard in the riding and in Ottawa.

Illegal blockades and the impact on Canada’s future
For over two weeks, our country and our economy have been paralyzed by protests and illegal blockades. Transportation networks for Canadian goods, services, and people are at a standstill; over 1500 employees have lost their jobs, while shortages of home heating oil, propane, and chlorine for water treatment jeopardize the health and safety of Canadians across the country. The Government’s vague and inconsistent response has not only failed to resolve the issue but allowed it to escalate with no end in sight.
To understand the current situation...

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day Celebration
STOUFFVILLE – Hello everyone! Je suis ravie d’être parmi vous pour célébrer la Saint-Jean dans notre collectivité! Aujourd’hui, nous saluons la place occupée par la langue française, son patrimoine et sa culture dans l’édification de notre identité nationale.
I am thrilled to be here today to celebrate St. Jean Baptiste day with our community! Today we recognize how the French heritage, language and culture have shaped our identity as a nation.
We think the history of St-Jean Baptiste Day in Canada dates back to 1606 when French colonists were en route to Acadia and rested on June 23 in New France (what we now know as Newfoundland), to celebrate...

100th Anniversary of the Temple of Fame Reception
AURORA – Good evening everyone, I’m Leona Alleslev, your Member of Parliament for Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill.
I am thrilled to welcome you all here tonight at the Temple of Fame Opening Night Reception. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Temple of Fame play. The original production was written, directed and performed by women of Aurora in 1918. How incredible is it to think that 100 years ago, the community of Aurora gathered together, just like we are here today, to celebrate the arts and acknowledge the achievements of historical women.
As your Member of Parliament I am proud that our Government recognized...

NATO Parliamentary Assembly Arctic Conference
US EMBASSY OTTAWA – I want to thank the NATO Association of Canada for inviting me here today, and I would also like to thank the US Embassy for hosting this event. As we are all aware, today is the memorial of the September 11th attacks. The devastation of that day changed the world forever. But during that horrific event, we came together to support our ally. We responded as an alliance and for the first time, NATO invoked Article 5.
The time for strength and unity as an alliance has not passed. I am sure it is...
